How token counting works
This tool estimates token counts using a ~4 characters per token approximation, which is widely accurate for English text across most major tokenizers (GPT, Claude, Gemini). Actual token counts may vary by 10-20% depending on the model's specific tokenizer, language, and content type. All pricing data is sourced from real-time API pricing and updated hourly.
This page uses the same approximate token counting logic as the main token counter, then applies Mellum's live input and output rates to estimate cost per call and total spend.
Cost only matters in context. Keeping Mellum pinned while you test prompts makes it easier to see when a cheaper peer is close enough, or when Mellum still justifies its rate.
